Are you creating a monument, headstone or memorial plaque to mark the death of a loved one?

After selecting the type of cemetery marker and the material from which it should be constructed — e.g. granite, marble or bronze — your next step is to write the epitaph that is to be inscribed or engraved on it.

In this Ultimate Guide to Epitaphs, we cover everything that you need to know in order to write a truly meaningful epitaph for your loved one.

In the introduction, we cover:

You’ll even find a helpful infographic to guide you in the writing process.

After the introduction, you’ll find 100+ quotes that are appropriate to use in a headstone inscription.  For ease of reference, we have organized our epitaph examples into themes:

Without further ado, let’s get started…

What is an Epitaph?

An epitaph is a short text honouring a deceased person, (often inscribed or engraved on their headstone, monument, memorial plaque, gravestone, tombstone or cemetery marker).   It usually includes the person’s name, dates of birth and death, along with a meaningful quote or Bible verse.

Epitaph

How Do You Write an Epitaph?

  1. Write the full name of the person, ensuring correct spelling.
  2. Add the birth and death dates.
  3. Choose a quote or Bible verse to appear on the headstone that praises the virtues of the deceased person or that reminds us that eternal life is promised by God.

Expert Tips For Writing an Epitaph

Andrew Latyshko, owner of Smith Monument Company Ltd. in Toronto, is an expert on headstones for graves, and has practical tips to share:

  1. Wait at least 3 to 6 months before considering the headstone epitaph.  Immediately following a funeral, families are usually not in the right frame of mind to make big decisions.
  2. Choose your words carefully as there isn’t much space to sum up your loved one’s life.  You can also use meaningful quotes, bible verses, or song lyrics.
  3. Some families wish to put wording on the sides or on the backs of cemetery headstones or monuments.  Be aware that not all cemeteries will allow this, so check the by-laws.
  4. You don’t have to add a wife’s maiden name. It is actually done less and less these days. It has been done for historical purposes so that people walking through a cemetery looking for someone can identify them more easily.

So far, this tactic seems to have worked.  It’s also one of the most famous tombstone quotes to date!  Here is a modern translation of Shakespeare’s epitaph:

THE GRAVE OF THE POET
WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE

Good friend for Jesus sake forbeare,

Famous Epitaphs:  Benjamin Franklin

As a young man, Benjamin Franklin wrote a humorous epitaph for himself in which he described himself as “food for worms.”  He did not intend this epitaph to be used as the official epitaph on his gravestone, (the wording for which he included in his Will).

This funny version, however, was graven on a bronze plaque and mounted on a brick wall of the cemetery in which his body rests, for all to enjoy.

The body of B. Franklin, Printer,
Like the Cover of an old Book.
Its Contents torn out.
And stripped of its Lettering and Gilding.
Lies here.  Food for worms.
But the Work shall not be wholly lost.
For it will as he believ’d
appear once more
In a new and more elegant Edition
Corrected and improved
By the Author.

Famous Epitaphs:  Oscar Wilde

Oscar Wilde was a legendary poet and playwright.  The tombstone quote used in his epitaph comes from his famous poem, “The Ballad of Reading Gaol,” a long poem commemorating the harsh rhythms of prison life.

This poem was this  last work, and was written while Wilde was serving two years of hard labour in prison for homosexuality.

According to Wilde, death was just another prison sentence.

OSCAR WILDE

And alien tears will fill for him
Pity’s long broken urn,
For his mourners will be outcast men,
And outcasts always mourn.

Famous Epitaphs:  George Washington Carver

Born a slave in 1864 on his father’s farm near Diamond Grove, Missouri, as an infant George Washington Carver and his mother were kidnapped by Confederate night-raiders and possibly taken to Arkansas.

His father, Moses Carver found and reclaimed his son, but his mother was never found.

It was on his father’s farm where Carver first fell in love with nature, where he earned the nickname “The Plant Doctor” and collected in earnest all manner of rocks and plants.

Washington Carver received his Bachelor of Science degree in 1894 and a Master of Science degree in bacterial botany and agriculture in 1897 from Iowa Agricultural College (now Iowa State University).

He later became the first African-American member of the faculty of Iowa Agricultural College, teaching classes about soil conservation and etc.

Throughout his lifetime, Washington Carver developed three hundred uses for peanuts and hundreds more for soybeans, pecans, and sweet potatoes.

After dying from complications from a fall down a set of stairs, his life savings were donated to the Carver Museum and to the George Washington Carver Foundation.

Through life-long habits of frugality, he had saved $60,000, which is equivalent to approximately $1 million dollars in today’s dollars.

Hence, on his epitaph it states:  He could have added fortune to fame, but caring for neither, he found happiness and honor in being helpful to the world.

GEORGE WASHINGTON CARVER

DIED IN TUSKEGEE, ALABAMA
JANUARY 5, 1943

A life that stood out as a gospel of
self — forgetting service.
He could have added fortune to fame
but caring for neither he found
happiness and honor in being helpful to
the world.

The centre of his world was the south
where he was born in slavery some
79 years ago and where he did his
work as a creative scientist.
