About York Cemetery

York Cemetery is a grade II* listed landscape and is one of only two privately owned Victorian cemeteries in the UK. Founded in 1837, it now encompasses 24 acres and is administered by The York Cemetery Trust with the support of the Friends of York Cemetery.

York Cemetery is a working burial ground. At the same time, it provides opportunities for conservation, education, and informal recreation within a protected environment close to York city centre.

Trustees, staff, Friends, and volunteers all work to achieve the right balance between the provision of a community facility and support for the environment.

Our Services

Burials and Memorials

York Cemetery is an “open cemetery”, which means that people of any religion or no religion at all can be interred here. We welcome everyone; there is no requirement to be a citizen of York.

he Cemetery Warden and staff give their personal attention to every step of arranging and carrying out an interment and helping you care for a grave afterwards.

Buying a Plot

New grave plots are available in both the Victorian and Modern Sections of the cemetery. New plots may be purchased either for full burials or for the interment of cremated remains.

Arranging a Burial

We have a long history of providing traditional burials. In addition, we are happy to cater for families wishing to arrange an alternative, green and natural funerals.
